The Greenhouse: The Future of Farming
Fresh Heads Farm is only one of a handful of aquaponic farms in Canada, championing innovative and sustainable practices right here in Markham! Aquaponics–the combination of aquaculture (the growing of fish) and hydroponics (the growing of plants)–is a unique farming method that creates a recycling ecosystem that’s as fascinating as it is eco-friendly. Plants love the nutrients provided by the rainbow trout, and the fish love the clean water filtered by the plants! This system uses 90% less water and 80% less land space than traditional farming, making it the most environmentally-friendly and low-impact method of farming. Plus, it allows for the greens to grow year-round, even through our harsh winters. Now that’s a game-changer for food availability and sustainability!

Upon stepping into the farm shop, you will be greeted by a charming rustic interior adorned with beautiful antiques and salvaged pieces. Whether you’re grabbing a bite at one of their cozy tables or picking up a thrifted basket for some shopping, you’ll marvel at how everything–from the tables and shelves to the very building–has been repurposed. Fun fact: The store is actually an old school portable that the family bought in a worn-down condition and lovingly rebuilt themselves. You can even see the chalkboards that have remained and are now used to post their delicious menu!
